The Health Service Management program is a perfect opportunity for those that are already in the health care field and are looking to advance their career or for a person who is considering a new career with plenty of potential for growth in the field. With a 16% growth predicted through the year 2018, the Health Services Management degree is one that will prepare the student to be equipped for one of the fastest growing career opportunities available today.
Upon receiving a Bachelor's degree in Health Service Management, a person can expect to find a variety of career opportunities with facilities dealing with health services such as hospitals, doctor's offices, private practices, nursing homes or other medical facilities. While experience in the health service field in addition to the HSM degree can help to find an advanced position, it is still possible and likely to find an entry-level medical administration position right out of the program. Depending on the place of employment, job responsibilities can vary including managing other personnel, helping with billing and collection, working on the budget of the facility, monitoring equipment levels and preparation, and observation of patient flow.
Health Service Management employees with a Bachelor's degree earned a median income between $40,000 and $76,061.

Chancellor University's Health Services Management is a fully accredited program that prepares students for a successful career in management in the health services and health care field. Health Services Management Course Descriptions
MG 218 - Managed Care Administration (3)
This course presents management tools for health care professionals in managed care and group practice. It also provides history of organizational theory development and overviews of legal, financial, administrative, marketing, and planning needs. Contrasts functions handled by health care administrators with those handled by managers of industrial enterprises. Prerequisite: None.
MG 250 - Human Resource Management (3)
This course is a study of the staff work of a personnel department and of the specific techniques used in performing major personnel functions. Topics covered will include job analysis, employee selection and placement, wage and salary administration, merit rating, collective bargaining, and the day-to-day administration of personnel relations. Prerequisite: MG 200.
MG 290 - Labor and Employee Relations (3)
Examines the underlying elements in a unionized and a nonunionized organization. The course will address the NLRA, accompanying regulations, and legal precedents which provide the framework for the organized labor movement. Included will be the process of union organizing, elections, collective bargaining, managing with a union contract, and conflict resolution through the grievance process and arbitration. Also covered will be the role of the manager in a non-union environment as compared to managers in an organized company.
The development of a problem-solving process for employees, the role of benefits and compensation, as well as the training of managers in the positive management of employee relations will be reviewed. Prerequisite: MG 200.
MG 301 - (3) Departmental Management in Health Care Service Organizations
An analysis of departmental and institutional objectives, management functions, and inter-departmental relationships in health services organizations. Prerequisite: MG 265.
MG 370 - Organizational Behavior (3)
Provides the framework for understanding the behavior of individuals functioning within an organization and the design and operation of effective and innovative organizations. The various topics addressed include the study of individual behavioral processes, interpersonal and group interaction, the design and functioning of innovative organizational structures, systems and processes, and creative and innovative change processes. Prerequisite: MG 200.
MG 401 - Total Quality Management in Health Care (3)
A senior-level course focusing on the philosophy and application of the total quality management concept in the health care environment. It provides methods for defining, implementing, and monitoring the unique mechanisms that help health care providers achieve quality in their programs. Prerequisites: MG 301, SC 230.
PL 334 - Current Issues in Health Services Management (3)
This course examines health systems and health services in the
United States. It also develops an understanding of governmental health plans with emphasis on current social, political, economic, and ethical issues of health services and health care today. Prerequisite: None
Dr. Ljiljana Krizanac-Bengez
Health Services Management Program Chair
Dr. Krizanac-Bengez serves as the lead faculty and chair of the Health Services Management program. Dr. Krizanac-Bengez received both her MD (1985) and PhD (1992) degrees from the Zagreb School of Medicine, University of Zagreb in Croatia. She received several prestigious distinctions including the International Union Against Caner (UICC) Fellowship, the Croatian State Fund for International Scientific & Technical Collaboration (ZAMTES) and the British Council Fellowship at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in the UK. After receiving her doctoral degrees, from 1993 to 1996, she pursued advanced postdoctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA. While there, Dr. Krizanac-Bengez conducted cutting-edge research on the role of CD44 in an allogeneic model of bone marrow transplantation. During that time she was a recipient of the Oncology Research Faculty Development Program Award, granted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). She published her findings in several internationally respected journals.
Dr. Krizanac-Bengez's other accomplishments include serving assistant professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Rudjer Boskovic Institute in Zagreb, Croatia. She was appointed as a research fellow at the Cerebrovascular Research Center, Department of Neurological Surgery at Cleveland Clinic. In 2002, she was promoted to Project Staff (Research Assistant Professor) at the Cleveland Clinic upon receiving an American Heart Grant. She has been conducting experiments using a novel in vitro model of blood-brain barrier. She has several recent high-impact, first-author papers based on this model. Dr. Krizanac-Bengez has also published over 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts, several book chapters/reviews, and presented over 40 abstracts at scientific meetings. She has continually been recognized for outstanding research talents and ability to apply her findings to create pragmatic solutions to some of the most complex and elusive medical and bio-pharmaceutical issues. Dr. Krizanac-Bengez also has held several teaching appointments and is a member of numerous professional societies.
Dr. Krizanac-Bengez is a recipient of multiple awards and honors from major domestic and international institutions. She has authored / co-authored 5 grants (1 AHA and 4 NIH), and received funding for breakthrough research. She has received multiple awards and honors from major research institutions including the Oncology Research Faculty Development Program (NCI), and the American Heart Scientist Development grants. She was named an "Alien of Extraordinary Ability & Outstanding Researcher" by the US Immigration & Naturalization Service for her Green Card Approval and is currently a US citizen.
The Chancellor University Health Services Management faculty is very dedicated and experienced with academic, practical and field experience. They boast a wide range of scholarly interests and offer a variety of philosophical and practical approaches to health services management. They are also deeply committed to teaching and advising every student to their fullest potential.
The Health Services Management Program at Chancellor University is both high quality and extremely affordable. Standard tuition rates for undergraduate programs are $385 per credit hour. Chancellor University also offers an extremely generous program for members of the military.
Academic Credit
Students who have already completed appropriate nursing, EMT, radiology or other health care technology training may be awarded up to 27 hours of block credit toward this degree.
Block credit is automatic credit hours towards Chancellor University class requirements. Please send information regarding your training or certification to the Office of Academic Records. You can fax your paperwork to 216-361-2732 or email it to AcademicRecords@ChancellorU.edu.
Military Discounts / Credits
Chancellor University is proud to show our appreciation to members of the military. Military personnel play a vital role in our country's safety and welfare. As a result, we provide a number of benefits including a military tuition discount to active duty, reserve, and veterans pursuing all Undergraduate and Graduate degrees. Military members pay only $250 per credit hour! We also provide a book voucher of up to $800 each academic year, $100 per class for up to eight classes, for Undergraduate military students. Furthermore, we show our appreciation to the spouses of active military members by providing them the same military tuition rate of $250 per credit hour.
Credit by Examination (CBE)
A student may request a special examination for course credit. Students pay a non-refundable exam fee for the course. After making an official application, a student has 30 days to complete the exam. The examination is graded by a subject-area faculty member and submitted with a grade of pass or fail to the Office of Academic Records. A pass grade results in credit's being entered on the student's transcript. A failing grade is not entered on the transcript. Neither a pass nor fail affects the student's cumulative GPA. Students should see their advisor to obtain a list of courses available for credit by examination.
Credit for courses taken by examination at other institutions cannot be transferred to Chancellor University. Credit by Examination may not be used toward the University's residency requirements.
Credits earned through Portfolio Review Process, Direct Assessment, or Credit by Examination may not be eligible for transfer credit at other institutions.
